Bak Kut Teh is a Chinese Teochew’s traditional dish that has pork ribs served with spicy herbs in black pepper based soup. Founder of Song Fa Bak Kut Teh started off as a street hawker in the late 60s operated from a pushcart stall. Today though Song Fa’s business do not operate from a pushcart anymore, they use pushcart as their icon of their belief to bring their patrons an original Bak Kut Teh dining experience.
You may have a choice from the normal pork ribs soup, loin ribs soup, pig’s kidney soup, pig’s liver soup, pig’s tail soup, pork tenderloin soup to fish slice soup, pig’s stomach soup or mixture of the 2 choices here.
I have tried on the traditional pork ribs soup. The meats were soft and tender and did not have any foul odor from the stale pork. Soup tasted spicy and refreshing and I actually asked for refill of the soup 3 times which was free.
All main soup dishes has the same soup based with that signature spicy taste of black pepper with herbs like the star anise. The pig’s liver meats were fresh and not overdone to give a chewy bite. Some veg’s were added inside so that you won’t feel greasy after eating too much of the pig’s liver.
Apart from the main soup dishes, Song Fa also serves dishes like braised pig’s trotte, braised pork belly, braised pig’s intestine and etc though their side dishes eg. Salted vegetables, Cai Xin, Kai Lan and dough fritters are more popular to go with the main soup dishes.
In the restaurant, the ambiance in the lighting, music from the 80s and some signature dish photos greatly increase your appetite to savor the Bak Kut Teh. Recommend to order the Song Fa Brew Tea to complement the Bak Kut Teh. It is a combination of Chrysanthemum flowers brew with Oolong tea leaves that gives you a soothing and bittersweet aftertaste.
If you are not sure of where to dine for this weekend, you may bring your family here to Song Fa to try out the authentic yet tasty Bak Kut Teh.
