[Singapore] Cheap Durians 2015

The durians season (from June to July period) started off with a cheaper price this year for 2015 thanks to the hot and wet weather that resulted in the abundance of harvest.

Quality durians like D13 and D24 going as low as $5 each with 'guaranteed to eat'. Even the Mao Shan Wang (Cat Mountain King - 猫山王)durian is selling at the lowest price ever seen at $10 each with other areas selling at an average price of $15 per Kg. "Nan Tian Fruits & Vegetables" and "Wu Ming Fruits Stall" have been selling durians as low as 50cents at Chong Pang Blk 102.

At Chong Pang, crowds can be seen queuing up for their grabs for the $1 durian promotion. Those regular kampung durians usually cost $2 each. The falling prices could be also due to Ramadan which the Malays are fasting during this period.

Eating durians can be easy as buy and eat on the spot. Once you have paid for your 'King of the fruits', you may request the stall vendor to have your durians cut opened and eat them at the tables provided which many stalls are practising it.

This year the ideal weather not only increase the quantity of the harvest, but also bring quality into the durians. Most of them have creamy and thick flesh which you would find in a good durian. Some would prefer it to have bitter-sweet taste and some may prefer the 'XO' taste in it.

Above was a recent shot taken in a durian feast with a group of durian-fanatics. From the 'satisfied' looks from their faces, you may have guessed the durians tasted good. Let's hope the price continue to fall for the durian prices so that we may have more durian sessions.

A little tips from what I learnt from the durian vendor in choosing your durians:
  • Gently shake the chosen durian near your ear.
  • If you hear a loud knocking sound, it could mean that it is not ripe and the flesh is hard.
  • No sound could mean that the durian is too ripe.
  • If the sound is dull, it is probably ripe.
  • You may double confirm by the fragrant odour from it by smelling.
  • If it is unripe, it will smell a bit raw.
  • If it is too ripe it will give a strong pungent smell.
