Detian Waterfall (德天瀑布)

One of the scenic spots that I visited during one of my tour in China is the Detian waterfall which lies in Daxin county of Guangxi province about 145 kilometers (90 miles) from the downtown area of Nanning. Detian was known to be Asia's largest transnational waterfall as it is shared by both China and Vietnam.

It actually consists of two parts. There is the main waterfall (Detian) on the Chinese side of the Guichun River, and then there was the Ban Gioc Waterfall (Banyue Waterfall) on the Vietnamese side of the river. It goes through three layers as it flows down from high of about 70m, wide about 200m.

I was lucky in a way that I came here at the right timing as it has the largest volume of flow during summer. The sensation of watching the vigorous water pouring down and hearing the resonance of the water roaring was fantastic. During other timing of the year when the flow is not too fast, you may take a ride on a raft to have a close-up view from the downstream.

Along the trail to the border, you may find Chinese stalls selling paintings, ornaments, honeycombs, wood crafting etc.

The 53rd border tablet shows China/Vietnam on each side. The other one is a typical Chinese border tablet nearby.

At the 53rd border, you may find a Vietnamese flea market selling various Vietnamese stuffs and products. According to the locals, you may bargain till as much as 50% to get a deal.

Overall I felt it's worth to travel down here to enjoy the breath taking scenic views despite the fact that most people will only travel to Guilin whenever they are in Guangxi. As Guilin is already developed as a tourist spot, you may consider to visit Detian waterfall as if it is designed by a master landscaper and enjoy its beautiful cascades crossing the border before trains and airplanes come to here. If you are traveling for a long trip, motels are easily available and you may spend a day or two visiting the other attractions nearby ie. Mingshi Scenic Area and Tongling Grand Canyon etc.
